Sri Ramayanam in short - Thirucchiththirakoodam

AzhwAr here narrates the concise story of Sree rAmAyaNa. First comes the description of ayOdhya. Then comes the birth of Sree rAma avatAra of nArAyaNa in the soorya vanSa. The reason for His avatAra is to remove the duhKa of dEvAs caused by rAvaNa. Then there is the description of rAma who resides in tillai nagar tiruchittira kooTa in archA avatAra.

Sage viSwAmitra requested daSarata to send rAma and lakShmaNa to protect his yAga. rAma was asked to kill tATaka even though she is a woman. Then SubAhu and mAreecha are the two rAkShasAs who were disturbing his yAga. Of them SubAhu was killed and mAreecha escaped narrowly. Then comes the description of tiruchittira kooTa where green trees abound and where about three thousand BrAhmaNAs sing hymns to Bagavan sitting on the throne. tirumangai AzhwAr also says chittira kooTa is a place where three thousand BrAhmaNAs sing hymns to BagavAn.

AzhwAr describes seeta pirATTi. Then comes His breaking the SivadanuS. After marriage on their way to ayOdhya they encounter paraSurAma who had gone round the world to conquer kShatriyAs. When he challenged rAma, the latter defeated him, took his bow along with his tapas. This Hero who is feared by enemies resides in chittira kooTa. The Baktas always worship Him. i worship those BaktAs of BagavAn.

Now AzhwAr narrates how kaikEyi asked daSarata the boons and sent rAma to the forest renouncing His rightful kingdom. Then guha helps Him to cross the Ganges. Barata comes to request Him to come back to ayOdhya and be the king. rAma refuses to do so in order to justify daSarata’s words. He gives Barata the pAduka and the right to be the king. Then He reaches chittira kooTa mountain and stays there. AzhwAr says though rAma’s period is long time back, we can still see Him in tillai chittira kooTa. Those who see Him and feel the purpose of eyes is fulfilled, are even greater than nityasooris.

rAma kills the rAkShasa called virAda. Then He goes to agastya ASrama and receives the danuS and arrows. When rAma took away the bow from paraSurAma, the dEvAs come and praise Him. rAma gives the danuS to varuNa and asks him to keep it safely and return at proper time. When He comes to the forest varuNa goes to agastya ASrama and gives him the bow and arrows that rAma took from paraSurAma. 

SoorpaNaka comes as a beautiful lady disguising her rAkShasi roopa and requests rAma to marry her. Though it is lakShmaNa who cut her nose and ears off it is said here rAma did it. Since lakShmaNa always does according to rAma’s intentions it is not wrong to say so. When Kara and dooSaNa come with a huge army rAma kills them all single-handed. Then He kills mAreecha who comes as a golden deer. He resides in chittira kooTa. Those who worship Him wander the earth purifying it.

seeta was abducted by ravaNa when rAma and lakShmaNa were near mAreecha. rAma lamented over her loss. They met jaTAyu who fought with rAvaNa and lost his wings. They do pittru karma to him and sent him to paramapada. According to his instructions they meet sugreeva the king of vAnarAs hiding from vAli. rAma kills vAli and restores the kingdom to sugreeva. He sent his army in all directions to find out the whereabouts of seeta. hanumAn sees her in Lanka and burns the city terrorizing rAvaNa and others. rAma resides in chittirakooTa. Those who worship Him are His dAsAs. AzhwAr says i am the dAsa of dAsAs.

rAma went with sugreeva and others to wage war against rAvaNa. They crossed the sea by building a bridge over it. The war broke between the vAnarAs and rAkShasAs. rAma killed not only rAvaNa but also all the asurAs. He made viBeeSaNa the king of Lanka. AzhwAr says he considers placing rAma’s tiruvaDi on his head as the greatest kingdom than ruling over a small territory.

rAma reached ayOdhya with viBeeSaNa, sugreeva and others. He accepted the kingdom from Barata. He listened to the comments of the people and sent seeta to the forest. She lives in vAlmiki’s ASram. She gave birth to the twins kuSa and lava who studied under vAlmiki Maharshi. He taught them Sree rAmAyaNa which they sang in the city of ayOdhya and in front of rAma. This rAma resides in chittira kooTa. We shall hear His story and see Him in archA avatAra. This is the sweetest amruta; the other amruta we don’t seek. 

Seri tava chambuhan tannai Senru konru Sezhu maraiyOn uyir meeTTu tavattOn eenda 
 nirai maNi pooN aNiyum koNDu ilavaNan tannai tambiyAl vAnETTri munivan vENDa |

 uraivAnai maravAda uLLam tannai uDaiyOm maTTru uru tuyar aDaiyOm anrE || Nine ||

Sree rAma killed the Soodra tapasvi and brought back alive the dead son of a BrAhmaNa; wore the gem garland which sage agastya gave Him; sent Satrugna to kill lavaNAsura; renounced lakShmaNa due to the curse of sage doorvAsa; resides in chittirakooTa where we can see Him and worship Him. And never feel the loss of not seeing rAmAvatAara.

After renouncing lakShmaNa Sree rAma wanted to go to His realm. The people of ayOdhya requested Him that they should be allowed to go wherever He goes. He agreed and asked them to follow Him. The trees, birds and animals too followed rAma to sarAyu river. Their rAma went into the river followed by them. He gave them a realm equal to paramapada and Himself went to His sthAna received by all the residents thereof. With four arms BagavAn sat on the throne revealing His glories. He is residing in this chittirakooTa as He is in paramapada. So let us worship Him here.

kulaSEKara AzhwAr in these prabandAs has sung Sree rAmAyaNa in short from Sree rAma’s birth upto reaching paramapada. He is forever residing in tiruchittrakooTa. hanumAn wanted to remain in this world as long as rAma’s kathA exists. But rAma could not bear the separation of His BaktAs. So He too has come from paramapada to chittrakooTa staying with hanumAn. With this kulaSEKara AzhwAr ends perumAL tirumozhi.
