Oh! rAma! i thought You would become a king whose feet is worshipped by all the people. i thought You would sit on this great royal throne of soorya vanSa, rule over the subject well. Alas! Alas! i listened to Your stepmother kaikEyi and sent You to the forest. ‘nan mahanE’ – You are an excellent extraordinary son with all the qualities a son should have. You never found fault with Your father even though i commit grave mistake. Only i am at fault. This is how i made You the king of ayOdhya! – is the ironical expression called ‘vipareeta lakShaNa’.

i am a very cruel king uttering cruel words to my own dear son who is full of compassion. You did not speak a word against me. In fact You immediately renounced all the luxuries of a king – elephants, chariots and horses. You took Your loving brother and wife. Oh! The forest is the full of thorns and pebbles. How did You walk rAma!

You are the dear son of kousalya. She brought You up with such tender care and affection that it is difficult for me to digest Your hard life in the awful life in the forest. You used to sleep on soft beds as You are born in the kAkutta race. But You are going to sleep from today onwards on the hard rocks. Oh! i am the cause of all Your sufferings.

daSarata was very fond of Sree rAma. Even for one moment if he doesn’t see Him he would send sumantara to bring Him. When rAma comes he would talk to Him and send Him. He would again ask Him to come. He will say ‘come and see me before You go’. Thus he was never willing to let Him go out of his sight. This father is now asking his son to go to forest for 14 years! daSarata himself wonder why his heart is not split into two!

kaikEyi, the daughter of kaikaya king, is a mahApApi. She dared to send rAma, the favorite of all the people, to the forest for no fault of His. i listened to her words and sent Him to the forest. i am more pApi than she. There is no parihAra (atonement) for my sin. Because You are born as my son You have to suffer like this – thus laments daSarata.

My son would always call me ‘ayyA’ with lot of affection. i would embrace Him well, who used to have natural beauty enhanced by ornaments. i am no more going to embrace Him, immerse in Ananda sAgara, to smell His head, to see His beauty of walking, to see His lotus-like face. Should i live even after sending Him away?

rAma deserves to be a king. But He now wears matted locks, bark dresses and devoid of ornaments. Of course, He looks more handsome like this. He goes to the forest where as i stay in the kingdom. In fact, i should have gone to the forest as a vAnaprasta renouncing the kingdom. Oh! sumantra! Oh! vaSiSTha! Won’t You advice what i should do now? Can’t You prevent Him from going?

rAma You learnt vEdAs from the ‘jnAna kaDal’ vaAiATha. kaikEyi! You have sent this my son to the forest. i think Barata has a share in this treacherous plan. Perhaps he is innocent. Either way Barata’s name and reputation is spoiled. You are the cause of the downfall of Your own son. You think You are making him the king. You never thought of loss of reputation. How can You bear to live happily after all these?

Oh! rAma! You once took away the bow and tapas in one stroke from parashurAma and now You take away my life and my tapas (which i performed to get You) in one stroke by going to the forest. You take me as an ordinary father. You don’t know how much i love You. Oh! My son! i gave kaikEyi those boons not knowing what she was going ask. After my promise she asked me these shocking boons. You want to make it true. Hence You go to the forest for no wrong of Yours. Let me be lucky to have many janmAs and to have You alone as my son in each birth.

Of the three mothers two mothers were sad about Your going to the forest rejecting the BOgAs of ayOdhya and kingship. The third mother is happy and in fact, is the cause for all these. Well! If You are going happily to the ‘kAnaham’ leaving ayOdhya, i too am happy to leave this city to go to ‘vAnaham’. i shall not live if You leave.

Sree pati nArAyaNa has taken rAma avatAra and went to the forest at the behest of kaikEyi. daSarata laments over this. These ten pASurAs talk of BagavAn’s greatness. Those who read and meditate on them will have love towards Him. He will have satva guNa as the wealth.
