Kausalya's lullaby to Lord Rama
mannu puhazh kousalai tan maNi vayiru vAittavanE
tennilangai kOn muDihaL SinduvittAi Sempon SEr |
kanni nan mA madiL puDai Soozh kaNapurattu en karumaNiyE
ennuDaiya innamudE irAghavanE tAlElO || One ||
This is called ‘piLLai tamizh’. The mother sings lullaby to her babe in the cradle. tAlElO is the word used for lullaby. tirukaNNapuram is one of the divya dESa in tanjOre District. Oh! rAma! You are born to kousalya to kill rAvaNa, the king of Lanka. You cut off his ten heads and caused happiness to all the dEvAs.

kaNDavar tam manam vazhangum kaNapurattu en karu maNiyE

You created Brahma first and he created the rest of the worlds as per Your sankalpa. You killed tATakai who was a terror to all. You are extremely handsome that those who see You lose their minds and senses. You are the supreme Lord making all those in the eight directions to serve You.
kongu mali karunguzhalAL kousalai tan kula madalAi

gangaiyilum teertta mali kaNapuratten karu maNiyE
engaL kulattu innamudE irAghavanE tAlElO || Three ||
You are the pet son of kousalya; the son-in-law of King janaka; the son of chakravarti daSarata; You reside in tirukaNNapuram where holier than ganga water flows; You are like tilaka of our race.

mA madalAi maithili tan maNavALA vaNDinangaL |
kAmarangaL iSai pADum kaNapuratten karu maNiyE
Emaruvum Silai valavA irAghavanE tAlElO || Four ||
You created Brahma in Your nABi Kamala. That shows Your paratva. To be born as a son of ant-like daSarata! – that shows Your soulaBya. You are consort of pirATTi and reside in tirukaNapuram. You are an expert archer and has SArnga bow.

ArA anbu iLaiyavanODu arungAnam aDaindavanE |
SeerALum varai mArbA tiru kaNNapurattu araSE
tArALum neeN muDi en dASarathee tAlElO || Five ||
Sree rAma gave Barata everything including the right to rule the vast kingdom. Then He went to a dreadful forest with lakShmaNa. ‘ArA anbu iLaiyavanODu’ who had an everlasting love to Him. lakShmaNa went to forest to serve his brother.
SuTTram ellAm pin toDara tol kAnam aDaindavanE
aTTravarhaTku aru marundE ayOdhi naharkku adipatiyE |
kaTTravarhaL tAm vAzhum kaNapuratten karumaNiyE
SiTTravai tan SolkoNDa SeerAmAtAlElO || Six ||
At the behest of kaikEyee Sree rAma went to forest. lakShmaNa and seeta accompanied Him. AzhwAr says ‘SuTTram ellAm’. Sree rAmanuja was asked about this by his SiSyAs. He replied ‘lakShmaNa said ‘aham sarvam kariSyAmi’ – i shall do everything to You. i means what the different bandhus do to You i will do it alone. AzhwAr means this.
aTTravarhaL – SaraNAgatAs. In daNDakArNya sansyAsis and others showed their bodies tortured by rAkShasAs and requested Him to same them. Sree rAma promised to do so. seeta pirATTi asked Him ‘why should You kill rAkShasAs who are not any way harmed us? Even as a tapasvi should You perform the action of a kShatriya?’ rAma replies ‘ I have given up this ayOdhya, I can give up you, I can exile lakShmaNa but not renounce these jnAnis and the promise that I have given. To protect them is my dharma’.
Alinilai bAlakanAi anru ulaham uNDavanE
vAliyai konru araSu iLaiya vAnarattukku aLittavanE |
kAlin maNi karai alaikkum kaNapuratten karumaNiyE
Alinaharku adipatiyE ayOddhimanE tAlElO || Seven ||
Sree rAma! You swallowed all the worlds during praLaya and lie down on a banyan leaf like a child. You killed vAli to give the kingdom to Your friend sugreeva.

kalai valavar tAm vAzhum kaNapuratten karumaNiyE
Silai valavA SEvahanE SeerAmA tAlElO || Eight ||
Sree rAma built a bridge across the sea to reach Lanka. He churned the milky ocean to get amruta. With His SArnga He killed all the enemies. Sree rAma who has performed all these astonishing feats is lying in tirukaNNapuram.

kaLai kazhu neer marungu alarum kaNapuratten karumaNiyE
iLaiyavarhaTku aruLuDaiyAi irAghavanE tAlElO || Nine ||
You are the favorite son of daSarata; You destroyed Sree lanka for Your favorite seeta. You reside in Your favorite city tirukaNNapuram. You give kingdom to Your favorite BaktAs like sugreeva and viBeeSaNa after destroying their enemies who are their own brothers.
dEvaraiyum aSuraraiyum tiSaihaLaiyum paDaittavanE
yAvarum vandu aDi vaNanga aranga nahar tuyinravanE |
kAviri nal nadi pAyum kaNapuratten karumaNiyE
Evari venjilai valavA irAghavanE tAlElO || Ten ||
BagavAn reveals His paratva by the act of creation. He reveals His soulaBya by ArchA avatAra as in Sree rangam. yAvarum vandu aDi vaNanga – it is possible only in Sree rangam not in paramapada. His bow SArnga is the symbol of dharma by destroying adharma. This is the avatAra rahasya.

konnavilum vEl valavan kuDai kulaSEKaran Sonna
panniya nool pattum vallAr pAngAya pattarhaLE || Eleven ||
These ten pASurAs are regarding the BagavAn residing in tirukaNNapuram. Those who read and meditate on the meaning will become BaktAs like kousalya, dEvaki, Barata and AzhwAr.
